Hackworth on the War
David H. Hackworth [hackworth.com] and Archive. He's a decorated veteran and someone not afraid to call all the REMF (look at up on wikipedia) for what they are. Scary stories really about what's really going on in Iraq right now. Amongst them ammunition shortages, Iraqi troops who go ARVN on Marines (another wikipedia entry).
Its another reminder that you don't have to be gung-ho to care about troops. Being patriotic isn't always about getting people killed.
Interesting quotes from his articles:
- Stupidity Causes Death. “Most of our tanks were left behind, and tankers, gun bunnies and ADA (Air Defense) guys became infantry,” says a 1st Cav leader in Iraq. “What we need are more tanks and tracked APCs (armored personnel carriers). We also need more Strykers (armored carrier vehicles), because tracks are no good for line-haul escort duty. However, the Strykers aren’t the end-all – they’re having problems maneuvering inside cities with RPG-proof cages. Bradleys can turn faster.”
- Where's the Armor?. Great from Iraq POV. The effect of email on getting first person accounts is amazing.
- Flunking the Combat Test. What happened when the 2nd Battalion of the new Iraqi Army met guerrillas. Takes 10 years to build an army.
- Getting it Right. A good piece about the M-16 and its potential replacement the XM-8 (a.k.a. OICW).
